Movie
Contradicts established lore for bland agenda
Prey, set in 1719, serves as the earliest entry in the Predator timeline, following a group of Comanche hunters. As expected from the franchise, the film delivers stunning visuals, but it comes with significant flaws that hinder its impact.
While the cinematography is impressive, the overall setting feels uninspired and lacks creativity. The worldbuilding does little to expand upon what we already know about the Predator universe, and instead of feeling immersive, it comes off as generic. The performances, particularly from the main cast, feel overly stoic, making the characters seem flat rather than emotionally engaging. While the film attempts to push a strong female lead, it does so in a way that often feels forced, making the protagonist's development less organic and more like a modern agenda-driven insertion.
The Predator itself is where the film fails the most in maintaining franchise continuity. The so-called "Feral Predator" is a baffling design choice-its primitive appearance and altered behavior contradict established lore. Given that the Alien vs. Predator films depict the species as fully developed thousands of years prior, it makes no sense for a Predator just a few centuries earlier to appear drastically different or underdeveloped. The film further weakens the creature's presence by making it noticeably underpowered, a stark contrast to the deadly hunters in previous installments. Its arrival on Earth also lacks a clear purpose, feeling more like an ex machina setup than a natural extension of the established lore.
Ultimately, Prey struggles with narrative consistency, failing to respect the groundwork laid by previous films. While it has great visuals, its questionable creative choices, character execution, and disregard for franchise continuity severely lower its standing within the Predator universe. It's another modern film that prioritizes reinvention over coherence, ultimately diminishing what made the original concept so compelling.
