A movie killed literally by shadows
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem is a film of extremes. While it boasts some of the best human writing in the franchise, it also suffers from one of the worst visual executions in modern sci-fi horror.
The film's most egregious flaw is its unrelenting high contrast, which obscures nearly every detail in shadows. The decision to push the darkness to such an extreme level renders action sequences nearly unwatchable, effectively hiding much of the film's creature effects and practical work. Since the majority of the film takes place at night or in underground locations, visibility is reduced to the point where much of the movie is an exercise in trying to decipher what's happening on screen.
However, where Requiem surprisingly excels is in its character writing. While it doesn't entirely escape the horror genre's tendency for questionable decision-making, the characters behave with far more intelligence and realism than in many other entries. Their actions are believable, and their survival strategies make sense, making the human element of the film far stronger than expected.
Another standout aspect is the film's reinforcement of Xenomorph biology. Specifically, their ability to inherit traits from their hosts. This is an essential part of the franchise's lore, and Requiem does a great job of emphasizing this evolutionary mechanic, further expanding our understanding of the creatures' terrifying adaptability.
The predator in this film is an intriguing presence, embodying the species' prideful, warrior-like nature. However, one of its early actions, skinning a random civilian, feels out of place within the established Predator code, making it a rare inconsistency in an otherwise well-developed portrayal.
Ultimately, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem is a frustrating experience. It has genuinely strong character writing and makes meaningful contributions to the lore, but its horrendous visual presentation severely damages its ability to deliver an engaging or even comprehensible experience. The contrast-heavy cinematography doesn't create atmosphere, it simply makes the film exhausting to watch.
