It has ended, but you had to make a zombie

Matrix Resurrections somewhat betrays the spirit of the original trilogy, with its only redeeming quality being Keanu Reeves as Neo. The first thing you'll notice is the absence of the familiar atmosphere, which was shattered not just by the green filter, but by everything else.

The original cast is nearly nonexistent, and the film tries to capture a sense of nostalgia, but not in a good way. It feels like a reunion with old friends after years of separation. Great in real life, but a letdown in an action movie. It disregards the lore and continuity of the previous trilogy, turning it into a confusing mess.

The familiar trope of the doctor keeping Neo in check with pills is overused here, along with other references to the original movie, like mirrors and recycled concepts. Morpheus and the other characters feel like hollow shells, completely divorced from their original selves. It's almost as if they're not even the same characters anymore. (I wonder how that happened...)

It completely undermines the ideas of the original movie, going so far as to make Neo and Trinity the central "batteries" of the system, a premise that feels like a lazy Deus Ex Machina moment, the kind I've come to despise in sequels that don't have a real reason to exist.

The most painful part, aside from the dreadful storyline, is how the movie uses modern CGI in all the worst ways, ruining the action scenes without any justification. It feels like someone said, "Use all the technology at our disposal, even if it's unnecessary and doesn't fit, just to show off what we can do." and that's exactly what happened.

Ultimately, Matrix Resurrections exists simply because it could, and it doesn't deserve to be considered canon. It doesn't fit within the established lore and ends up as nothing more than a forgettable cash grab. Something that should've stayed in the past. An absolute disaster.
